my annual retreat is over..... i think that the trip could definitely be recap in a couple of blogs...involving keywords such as:
lost...
parisians...
train rides...

flat/black/fat...

but i think i would need quite some time before i could sit down and recap my annual retreat in words.... to get this re-cap started.... my impression of europe (from my trip back in 2001) is quite different from the impression i had felt this time....still trying to figure out the 'why' and 'what'... meanwhile, my flickr page has some of the trip in photo format...(for anyone or no one who is interested)

the challenge continues....

1. still working relatively long hours
2. still could not catch any soap opera on tv
3. still could not pick up a book and have some bedtime readings
4. still could not read through all of the magazines i have bought since feb
5. still wakes up at 4am and falls asleep at 5am

where did all my time go? i could not believe that it all went to work, eat, sleep and procrastination...

saw 2 movies today ... very tiring indeed

a. tokyo sonata - a bittersweet movie about japanese family, quite perfect timing to watch this during the global economic crisis

b. watchmen - the long awaited movie to be watched in an imax theatre....but expectations always tag with disappointment....i would highly recommend the graphic novel...the movie did not do any justice to the craft and brain of the original work
however, the soundtrack is quite fun - back to the 80s' best compilation yo!

after a long and hardworking feb! the upcoming march is getting more intense than ever...with work, upcoming interviews, lots of movies, shows, and the long awaited trip to london/paris in early april....it's simply a busy and exciting month! more challenges? come test me!!!

march 28th - license interview (okay...not so looking forward)

coldplay in hkg again

wow...after almost 2.5 years? i think...coldplay is back to hkg again...i saw them back in sept 2006. i mean they have definitely became more pop than ever, and i am not especially the biggest fan of their latest album....yet, their songs (esp. Parachutes album) definitely hit my sentimental side...and i just want to hear them sing their old songs live again...i think they sound better live than the cd...

i have bought parachute twice because the cd is so overplayed and it got all scratched up...and with recent gloommy weather in hk, i have started to play the songs again and again during my commute...

i must admit...i had shed quite a few tears listening to their parachutes album...so much memories...and recently hearing the rumors that they would split up soon in the near future...makes me more eager to attend their upcoming show in march (but really hope they dont play too much from their new album)

they were so down-to-earth, simple, and chill back then....i missed them...

spent almost 7 hours in the print studio yesterday...what a day! after 7 hours of jumping around, blasting music, singing along, and of course making my shirt a complete mess with ground/acid/and paint...i have successfully dispose all of my negative energy! i was so tired by 11pm and i really wanted a beer....but no, i have stayed discipline ... i had another bottle of water.

i had many music phases for that '7 hours of having everything to solely myself' period...
of course had the cantoopop phase...easy to singalong...but i was really digging the stevie wonder phase last nite...good that i have his complete best which i can just replay lots of times

but this morning....i had such a craving for J&M (judy and mary)....dont know why? but what a phase i had back then...i really liked them, esp. their 'POWER SOURCE' album! they had this incredible energy that i just started jumping whenever i play that album...btw, that album came out on 1996...

it has been quite a long stressful week..

had a really scary but random nightmare last nite...arm felt like it has been broken...and of course the neverending war-zone mode at work...everything adds up to the gigantic monster wanting to explode...and spread its bad aura onto everywhere...

i guess doodling, digging for different kinds of music (..was looking at my old cds.mp3s last nite...) is my therapy...and i am currently in the process of learning to enjoy running...i cant wait til i can get back to swimming when i actually have the time to join the club...

i think i have realized that i could only really be mindless and undistracted when i am focused on a one person activity ~vaccum activity?!~

so relieved that i dont have to go to work this weekEND...and hopefully i can have the print studio all to myself tmr evening....can blast whatever stupid music and do some sing-along!

so the day started on a really bad note...my work computer had experienced its first fake death *quoted from the DELL's service centre, and of course they would not be able to solve the problem*. I was stuck to work on my colleague's desk (who is on leave this week)....and his desk is surely one hell of a desk...it took me a while to be able to find a spot for the mouse to be placed on...

so as my hectic day continues....i have received a good surprise; i got a free tix to watch a jazz show this evening...*yes i should had stayed at work but jazz sounded exactly the therapy i needed after a long busy day with my computer's fake death* ... just to put you in context, jazz for me = miles davies, dave burbeck, art tatum...you know what i mean...

it was not until i have received my tix at the venue then i realized that i was attending a fusion jazz concert. To be frank, i did not have good experience listening to this stylo ... i was always intimitated by this genre. However, i must say that i have enjoyed the 2.5 hours concert (there were some parts that i was just confused ... and i did not really enjoy the saxaphone because i was never a big fan of that instrument). I was especially happy when i heard the double bass solo because it is one of my fav. instruments of all times.

I am not sure that I would actually go buy a cd of the artists but I think that it is definitely an educated and fun experience to watch the live sets. I am really content that I have experienced something fresh this evening.

as on this side of world where our office is busy making things and waiting them to be built and finish, i have just heard that our dear long - awaited TVCC is on fire...not just small accidental flames ... but fierce unstoppable flames burning burning burning ... just like the kind we see in hollywood movies! what a shame?! esp. on a long awaited project like such, i really hope that the fire has been extinguished and not spread to the CCTV!

on another note, as i would be too busy working instead of maintaining my daily procrastination and writing blogs for no-one to read whatsoever... i have come across this dude who puts his procrastination for the enjoyment of others...i really like his work and i would like to share this with you...

after a tiresome and black sat, i got a well-deserved sunday ... dreamlike weather, chill afternoon at the printmaking studio, a shitty movie that i could laugh about with my movie buddy, and my dream meal...it is always this much better after the struggle of a bad moment!

btw, do not waste money to see 'the spirit' unless u wanna snore in a theatre....it's better off re-watching '300' instead

what a day! the black sat officially started at 3am and ended at 8pm...

1. devil insomnia visited me again from 3am - 6am
2. could not solve my work problems at 5am
3. cramps cramps cramps...not only twisting my stomach, but also my brain
4. could not find the 4GB card when i most needed
5. my attempted organized timetable had completely collapsed due to miscommunication with a friend.
6. wasted two movie tix (when someone could actually take over the seats)
7. got lost somewhere between central, sheng wan, and west central...what a walk
8. made a roundtrip between mk and cwb within 2 hours time...talking about being at the most crowded places at once!
9. got lost somewhere in mk...
10. could not re-schedule the tix because i was a day early....
11. bump into someone that i really did not want to see ever again...
12. octopus ran out of money when i hopped onto the bus back to hkg...and of course i did not have any change on me...so i basically paid double!
13. felt like throwing up for 3 hours - when there were all these yummy food (esp. golden shrimps!) on the freakin' table.
14. felt like i was beaten up by someone on the stomach til 12am.
15. nasty polaroid film stuck to my camera.
16. i did not enjoy a single minute of my life during this sunny nice afternoon...what a shame!

on another note, of course i had to spread my black aura to the close-by peers. i think i had successfully ruined a dinner with my 2 friends.

tomorrow would be a better day! it has to! i would not allow more of these black aura to be chasing me!

sometimes it's good to chat with friends about things happening out there...what people are interested in...what kind of work are out there....what people are thinking

had a short chat with a friend living in london about a lot of things, and we ended the conversation with 'what kind of artists do we admire?'

as i was walking home through the park last nite, i had trouble to find contemporary artists that inspire me. i am not the kind of audience who look for the deep meanings in all art works...sometimes it's the sensation / the aura that i can connect with his/her work ... most of the time these feelings arisen are very temporal and one-time deal...

but today, i have reconciled with a long lost connection with this artist - hiroshi sugimoto.
i remember that i had first encountered his work back in a gallery in Chelsea, NYC in 2001. His photographs are taken with such precision and isolation. i missed his work a lot and therefore i spent some time to do to re-visit his work. The work i saw back in Chelsea were his architectural series. But i loved his water/horizon series the most.

after all these years, his works still extract the feelings i had back then when i first encountered his work. H. Sugimoto is definitely one artist that i still admire very much.

yes ... it happened again ... i could not sleep for a good 3 hours last night ...
so why is that?
i used to be able to sleep anywhere, any time... but this has not happened lately.
~no, it's not because of work. work has actually been quite easy lately... until today...
we are participating in a very fun/exciting/ but demanding competition... yes, it's time to put in my first full force in 2009
~is it because the news had been so sensitive lately? yes, i am not so comfortable of sharing this with the world, but i do respect what my family does to honour my beloved grandma!
~is it the running? i hope not because i am planning to stick with this sport for awhile.
~there have been some disturbing moments this week. not going to talk about the details, but it would be too silly to be the reasons for the uprising of the insomnia monster.

(don't think that it works as well as i hope it could have)
i have not been drinking lately either
i stopped myself to continue reading this disturbing book. actually, i have stopped myself from reading b4 bed lately.

what else can i do? do i have to drink the warm milk and count sheep again?!

1. my stereo (10 years old, received as a gift when my mom got her credit card...) finally broke. So I have detached all the plugs to throw it out of my room. I took glimpse of this nara toy that my friend had bought me 5 years back. i first startled...then dust it off and place it next to my bed.
~i had a split second of remembering my friend (now in aussie pursuing her dream)...i have not seen her for 3 years at least....i hope that she is doing well and have found her dream.

2. i received a phone call at work yesterday. My friend (now stationed in BJ) calling me crying and emotional. I was so worried at first, and later I realized that she was crying happily because she has finally received the CD that I have sent to her earlier. She has been looking for this soundtrack for quite so time. We used to talk about the soundtrack all the time. And by chance, i saw it in the cinema shop and immediately bought it...thinking of her the entire time.
~i felt so blessed to hear from her and that she is okie, working alone in BJ. i enjoy how doing little things could make her so happy all the time. Yes, she is emotional type, but the good kind...laughing all the time, spreading her joy and excitement to everyone around her all time!

3. I was going to watch 'The curious case of Benjamin Button" last night alone. I mean, it's a 3-hours long movie and who would wanna spend 3-hours (930pm show) to watch a movie on Friday night?! i was kinda worried that the movie would be too long and become a drag (a lot of movies talking about someone's life tends to do that).... and then i received a phone call from my sister saying that she has bought tix for one of my buds and herself to sit next to me. I was so touched....(of course i did not show it).
~i am so happy that i did not watch this film alone or with ppl that i hardly know. i was so emotional during the entire film...i had quite a number of tear dropping moment, and i definitely needed to talk to ppl who know me well about the film immediately after. i got all of that last night.

4. i started chatting with one of my old friends since this past week. yes, this is because we had a common topic - insomnia. I know her but i dont know her well. We went out for a quick drink last night to talk about each other's problems/random thoughts. Drinking/catching up with and old friend/and sitting outside -- perfect setting for a friday late night.
~i am happy that she decided to ditch her party and came out to watch me drink tea in the patio. i have almost forgotten that it could be so easy and comfortable to talk to someone like her. i did not think too much of anything i spilled out of my mouth. We laughed, swore, and shared our thoughts. And the best part is, I got a very good night sleep when i got home after.

today is such a beautiful day ... the sun shines brightly on the sky to wake me up...there is a slight breeze in the air... today would be a great day just like yesterday...

yes, yesterday was the last holiday b4 work of 2009 begins.

it maybe of this reason - the denial of needing to be in the office at 9am the next day. therefore, my subconscious mind is telling my brain to keep thinking...to keep being awake, because the best time is not going to last....

unfortunately, this is not such a good idea because i did not fall asleep until 700am this morning, and i had to wake up at 730am and get ready to work

all i remember is that my eyes were wide open in the dark for as long as i can remember; remember that the room turns from pitch black to greyish blue, seeing the dim sunlight shining through my windows....

i will not ponder why i could not fall asleep,
i did not read anything boring last night,
i remember that i was counting sheep at 4am (when was the last time i seriously did that)
i listened to like a whole bunch of music...fiona apple, mazzy star's both cds, portishead live, garden state ost....my macbook must be burnt out...
i did think a lot about the movie i watched in the afternoon - 非誠勿擾
~i highly recommend the film~ but i definitely sympathized with a lot of the little thoughts that the movie raised; i guess tiny deja-vus ....

now i have took a nap at lunch time and wake up....i am in the office again....600pm will come soon....then i will fall asleep again.

the nightmare of this insomnia not only carries through last nite of forcing me to stare at the ceiling for 7 hours in complete darkness, but onto today's surreal office setting...with the yellowish fluorescent light shining onto my computer screen....another 4 hours to go, then i can fall asleep again...

and maybe the hkg music scene shall do something along these lines as well. i think that we need to be more educated (including myself) of the good local shit out there..

until i woke up the next day not realizing what i have done to my plate...

weeks and days have passed by, and i still do not understand why and how my plate turns out to be this way....

but that's not what bothers me....

while i am staring at it, something is totally missing... something that would give the entire print its meaning, its heart & soul...

but of course i do not know what is missing piece...

and then my dear friend told me this evening,

"maybe it is meant to be missing something"

have i been thinking too much? am i too thirsty to grab this whatever thing i am looking for?

empty-plain-white could be good....

but i cannot realize it right now because i have been sunken into a whole pile of randomness...

i am a fan of digital...8 gigs of music that fit within a 6.2mm thk ipod...phone that practically works like a computer...i am a tech-nerd wannabe...but on the other hand....

i want analog to stay....

yes yes... i am taking a crash course on 'introduction to work endurance - a study of multitasking' this week. this basically means long neverending hours for a week + trying to distribute the work load to provided resource, yet realizing these resources are just making the work running in circles...running right back at you!!!

my brain is smashed..but i can do this...

at least that's what i think when i drink my Starbucks every morning (while doubting that there is no double shot in my cappuccino)

had a pleasant evening, drinking wine, watching strangers enjoying the company really tasting the food **i had tenderloin, yum yum** just chilling this is exactly what i needed after a long annoying day at work.... i am very content at this very moment... i have no desire to talk about the difficulty at work... i am just enjoying the evening as we speak... maybe it's all because i am tipsy *this is definitely a good tipsy* let me mention the wine that i have tasted this evening:
